How to Market on Social Media: A Guide for Teacherpreneurs

Slide2-19.jpg

Unfortunately, both TpT & blogging are not a "build it and they will come" kind of deal. Simply creating it is not enough. You need to let people know that what you have created is out there and where to find it! That is where social media comes into play! There are a lot of different options when it comes to marketing on social media these days. We are going to focus on just a few of the ones that we use.

How to use Social Media to Market your TpT Store and Teacher Blog

Facebook

Facebook seems to be an especially popular social media platform for teachers in particular. Create a Facebook page for your business. Here you can share articles and videos that you think your audience will find interesting. Blog posts that you write. Resources that you created that your audience will find helpful. Upcoming sales and giveaways and so much more!

Pro Tip: Use automation programs like IFTTT and Missinglettr to schedule your posts and save you time! Learn more below!

Instagram

This is probably our favorite social media platform! We love how visual it is and the community of teachers that are on Instagram are amazing! Instagram is another option for those who are not interested in creating and keeping up a full blog. Given how crazy busy everyone seems to be these days, it's easy to see why Microblogging is so popular with its short, frequent posts.

Pro Tip: Schedule your Instagram posts ahead of time using Later. This will help you save time and create a purposeful marketing campaign with beautiful images.

Pinterest

While not technically a social media platform, Pinterest often gets linked in with the lot of them so we're going to include it here. Pinterest is an amazing visual search engine that is powered by users! One of the great things about Pinterest is that your pins have the potential to keep working for you for years to come unlike posts on most social media platforms that are more of a one and done kind of deal.

Pro Tip: Schedule your pins ahead of time with Tailwind. Tailwind will not only save you a lot of time and help you be consistent, Tailwind makes it easy for you to share your pins with other teacherpreneurs through Tribes. Most Tribes have rules that specify how many pins you can share with the group and how many pins from other members in the group you need to share on your Pinterest boards in exchange. Yay teamwork!

Twitter

Twitter is another platform that seems to be very popular in the education world. Twitter allows you to share short snippets of information along with a link, photo, gif, or a location with your followers. You can even conduct a poll with your followers! The most challenging thing about Twitter is the limited number of characters you are allowed to use in a tweet. It forces you to get right to the point (and also to be a bit creative).

Pro Tip: Use automation programs like IFTTT and Missinglettr - learn more below!

YouTube

YouTube is great for sharing a lot of information in a short video. If a picture is worth a thousand words then a video must be worth at least a million! Videos allow your followers a chance to get to know you better in a short amount of time. They can, also, make it easier for you to share your personality with your followers. Whether video is a good fit for you is a personal decision. It has worked very well for a lot of people but it isn't for everyone and that is okay. Figure out the platforms that best fit you and go all in!

Pro Tip: Use video programs like Renderforest to create video previews of your TpT products and Lumen5 to create video previews for your blog posts. These programs are easy to use and create cute, very professional looking videos!

If This Then That (IFTTT)

If you've seen our post, 12 Amazing Ways IFTTT Helps Teachers, then you already know how much we love IFTTT! It is a genius program that can do so much! According to ifttt.com, "IFTTT is the free way to do more with hundreds of the apps and devices you love, including Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, Evernote, Nest, Fitbit, Amazon Alexa, and Gmail. We bring services together into Applets. Applets are specific things that can happen when you connect services — things your apps can't do on their own." We use it to help us pin, tweet, and share our new IG posts on Facebook. All you have to do is spend a few minutes setting up the Applets and you're ready to go! IFTTT will continue to work for you just like a free virtual assistant. Feeling Overwhelmed?

Don't worry! We all are :) There are too many options for you to jump into all of them at once. We recommend that you pick one (maybe two) to begin with and really get to know it. Once you feel really comfortable on that platform then you can consider adding another.

Which one should you start with?

Good question. One so good that we would guess you would get quite a variety of answers if you were to ask a busload of entrepreneurs.

If we were to start over again, which one would we focus on first?

Honestly? We would probably focus on Pinterest. It's the gift that keeps on giving. Once we create a pin, it can be shared again and again! And the platform actually encourages that! Pinterest wants to keep bringing up pins for people to find again and again because it isn't really social media. If anything, it is more like personal media. It is a search engine designed to help users find inspiration.
